(Participants At The Writing Competition)
The R.L.Chopra Memorial Inter School Creative Writing Competition was initiated 5 years ago in the memory of Late Shri. R.L.Chopra, Chairman, New Era Public School. The aim was to encourage reading among students and open their eyes to the exhilarating world of books.
This year, the competition was held on 13th July, 2011. The book choice was “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua“. This book has been widely appreciated as a parenting memoir and was on many best seller lists.
17 schools participated – each represented by a team of maximum 3 students.
The participants were welcomed by the Principal, Mrs. Vandana Chawla, who spoke to them about the beautiful world of books and how reading extensively energizes and enriches the mind.
Later, the participants wrote a creative piece (800-1000 words) based on the book – in answer to the statement given to them:
“Born to immigrant parents in a foreign/culture – facing the struggle to remain true to her roots – these were the challenges Amy Chua faced in her endeavour to be the best parent. No wonder she became the quintessential “Tiger Mother”. Discuss.”
A panel of 4 teachers went through each entry, all being well written and a pleasure to read. The results are as follows:
- 1st Prize – Shubhankar Sengupta (St.Columba’s School)
- 2nd Prize – Mallika Pal (Vasant Valley, Vasant Kunj)
- 3rd Prize – Shashwat D. Nagar (New Era Public School, Mayapuri)
